Experimental set-up and possible outcomes of an error-tolerant search for a mutable PSM. In the first search, MS/MS data is searched against the complete Homo database, resulting in ground-truth knowledge of 28,916 PSMs after necessary filtering. Subsequently, the same datasets are searched against the Pan and Pongo databases, respectively. The example concerns a mutable PSM with sequence differences between all three included databases. The only outcomes possible for a non-error-tolerant search or an identical, homologous PSM are the identification of the correct, non-mutated sequence (top) or no PSM match (bottom, outcome 4)
